Long awaited update.

Posted on November 26th, 2008

Ok so I recognize it has been months since I have updated my blog, the good news is I am back in action and have much to talk about.  First thing I want to start off with is what an amazing semester I have had.  Looking back in high school I was such a quiet guy and kind of kept to myself most of the time.  I kind of feel like I am finally getting out of my shell and have changed into an entirely different person.  I have so many awesome friends and have can’t wait for what life has in store for me next.

Later tonight I will head to Tulsa to spend Thanksgiving with a good friend Alex.  His family was nice enough to invite me over for thanksgiving and it should be a good time.  Give me a chance to also cruise around Tulsa, which I have only been to a couple times now.  I’m also using my short break to catch up on a lot of schoolwork and business work!  This semester I have been enrolled in 3 studio classes, which is craziness!  I figured I would give watercolor another shot this semester and I think it’s what I needed.  I now realize that watercolor is just not for me.  I consider myself an experimentation artist, I need a forgiving medium I can experiment with and change things with in order to get what I want.  Watercolor isn’t forgiving at all, if you mess, you’re kind of stuck with it.  I’ve also been taking ceramics, which has been a pretty interesting class for me.  I’ve always kind of thought as ceramics in that cliché way that it’s a “pottery” class or something.  Once again, the Art department surprises me.  What I mean to say is that many people think Art is such an easy thing or an easy major, but trust me.  Take a few art classes and you will continually be challenged and surprised by how much work it actually is.  While I kind of wish I hadn’t selected Studio art as my major I do feel as though I’ve learned a lot and been pushed creatively to think in different ways.  Something I’ve also come to discover is how much different Studio Art and Graphic Design is.  Studio Art is so much more deep and conceptual.  You will often here many of the real studio artists laugh at the graphic designers and now I can understand why.  I would honestly consider Graphic Design to be more of a bridge between business and arts.  Designing a website isn’t very conceptual and generally is straightforward compared to a lot of the thought and work you put into a true gallery aimed art piece.  The true is, this deep art stuff isn’t really for me.  I enjoy being tested and constantly learning new things and thinking about things differently but it’s not really something I could ever see myself doing.  Most of my work ends up being very visual and possibly what you might consider “kitsch” but I am happy with that.  I have plenty of friends who just get lost in the deep art world and it’s just not for me, but I give them all the respect in the world.  I mean, I’m doing graphic design in a studio art degree!

Looking down the road I have about a semester left and then I’m on to the real world, or I guess whatever I make of it.  I haven’t really decided on one set place yet, I love the northwest my family is from there and I love them, but I may end up wanting to do something new and on my own.  Being away from family out in Oklahoma has really taught me a lot and I have grown up so much.  I love feeling independent and feeling like I am capable of accomplishing things on my own.  My ultimate goal is to put together possibly a web-oriented travel company or even a small travel agency geared towards a young audience.  Too many college students are worried about traveling in Europe or so far away from home.  I’d love to put together a company where I can advise and also have trips multiple times a year where I can bring people on a pre-planned trip that mixes the young fun stuff with a little bit of the history you would expect on the typical tour.  Basically it would kind of be a Rick Steves type deal but with a younger audience in mind.  It would be a culmination of ideas from previous Europe trips and mainly my most recent trip to Europe with my brother Jeremy and best friend Ryan.

I have to give credit to my brother for getting me into the whole travel thing, I love challenging my thoughts and mentality about things.  Learning about new cultures, new foods and new things is just awesome.  Just yesterday I decided to go to the Sushi House, which normally I am not the biggest fan of Sushi but I thought hey maybe I just had a bad experience or two let’s give it a shot.  I had the best experience ever there.  I really didn’t have one thing I didn’t like.  Edimame, Crab Rangoo, all kinds of crazy sushi and sake!  After you remove these negative mentalities from your mind and just do it it’s almost always never as bad as you thought it was.  It’s strange how we tie to these social norms or typical mentalities about certain things based on where we grew up around the world about certain things.  For now, I’m off to think about my next big adventure, where to?  Maybe Spain or Greece or maybe Egypt?

Back in Action

Posted on August 11th, 2008

So after a crazy summer of Europe trips, Oregon and hanging out with the fam. I have finally made it back to the depressing state of Oklahoma and the “Excellent” weather that comes with it.  The awesome part is my place is totally sick and it will be cool to meet up with old friends, I have been seeing them around town and am looking forward to getting back into the groove of things.  Hopefully school this year won’t be too bad considering I am a 5th year senior (brutal) but I guess it’s just life.  I don’t really know my plan after school anyways, I love the unknown though, I can’t wait to see what lies around the next corner and to find out what I will be doing in 6 months and in 12.  I am decking out my place with some pretty tight stuff, that way if a tornado hits and tears the place out of the ground I will be able to find my stuff easier.  The most valued item currently is my Travelocity gnome which has made his way all over the US and will be located in candid shots over the course of the next year.  Give you all an update soon, if the weather doesn’t kill me first.

Upcoming iPhone App Project

Posted on July 28th, 2008

So a few weeks back I was thinking and came up with this great idea for an iPhone app, I’m not going to say what it is just yet, but I think it’s a really great idea and I hope it is really going to change the way people communicate and share on the go. I shared the idea with my brother Jeremy and he was all over it too.  We put our heads together and now 2 weeks later we are happy to say we have found a developer, have our business license in the works and the app should be online and available within 3-4 weeks! We are really excited about it and are going to put all our effort into making it something truly amazing and useful. This is our first iPhone app so cross your fingers for us!! I will give you more details when I am allowed too :)

Things I don’t like…. “Operations”

Posted on July 25th, 2008

Over the past few years I have experienced a little thing I like to call an “Operation” multiple times.  Now I am not sure if it’s because I have grown up in this world of technology and instant satisfaction with email and downloading songs and movies instantly through iTunes but I cannot stand Operations!!  For those of you who aren’t really sure what I am talking about, an operation is basically something that is a really simple task like going out to dinner or doing some yardwork, that turns into a massive deal.  Going out to dinner is a really simple task, you spend 2-3 minutes figuring out where you want to go, drive there, eat and come home.  We don’t really need these long ordeals, I spend 8 hours everyday at work doing projects and operations, I don’t need them when I come home too.  I suppose I am just all about effeciency.  Slam wham kazam.  So for the few of you who read this, please make my life a little more enjoyable and exclude me from any future operations.  Thank you, and good luck.

Awesome weekend

Posted on July 23rd, 2008

So I had an awesome time this past weekend with the family. We decided to fly down to LA with the little d man and hit up Disneyland for the first time. Unfortunately for little d, going to Disneyland was like being on LSD and tripping shrooms. Yes, now I can understand what it would be like thinking back on Buzz Lightyear. I mean hey it even has Buzz in the title, hmm. After that Cambria and Chris scouted out wedding spot locations in the park. They came to a consensus and the planning was over! Their wedding will be held inside the famous attraction, A moment with Mr. Lincoln. Anyways, afterwards we headed to Santa Monica and hit up some sweet surf shops and saw Laird Hamilton, a pro surfer. Got some awesome food on the pier and headed back into the smog death trap that is the shithole LA. The end.

Europe 2008

Posted on February 25th, 2008

Well its been about 8 months since my last europe trip and I look back on what an awesome experience I had. I cannot wait for our trip this year. We are working on a great podcast that will be in HD, have better audio and much better dialogue. We are currently finalizing our flights and itinerary and are so excited to be creating this awesome thing. For those of you who have no clue what I am talking about, my best friend Ryan and I went to the UK last summer and made podcasts along the way, and had a website called TearinuptheUK.com. Well that site ended up being pretty popular so we got to thinking. There really isn’t that many great resources out there for college students in traveling. So this summer we are going to Europe for a few weeks to create an awesome podcast with better equipment and lots of tips and tricks in how we are traveling. Head over to http://www.tearinuptheeu.com and leave your email for a reminder when the site goes live!
